What is happening to the weather???

The news about weather continues to confuse us. 2012 was one of the wettest years in the UK, 2013 will be one of the warmest years globally, yet the years from 2013 to 2017 will not be any warmer, and we are in the middle of the coldest winter for years. All of these stories have appeared recently so what is really going on? Let’s look at each in a little more detail.

Why should you be bothered about what is happening in the Arctic?

Strange things are happening to the north of us, not so far away in the Arctic Ocean.
While much Britain suffered the wettest summer for decades to the north the sea ice was melting at an unprecedented rate. Satellite images like the one shown here recorded that extent of Arctic sea ice hit a new low, the smallest area ever recorded in September 2012.

The Place of Environmental Theology

This publication has arisen out of a conference jointly hosted by the European Christian Environment Network (ECEN) and IBTS held in Prague in August 2006. The Conference brought together participants from various parts of Europe to explore the theology of creation care and how seminaries, theological colleges and faculties, and Christian training courses across Europe could be encouraged to build a concern for the environment into every aspect of the life of Christian communities – in learning and living as the people of Christ.
A Time for God's Creation

Throughout the year the Church is invited to recall in a special way each of God's great deeds in Jesus Christ. Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Good Friday, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost - one reminder follows another, year by year. But no special time is reserved for recalling that God is the Creator of heaven and earth, the source of life. No special time is set aside for giving thanks for the gift of God's creation.
Water - Source of Life

Water was a theme of the 4th ECEN Assembly in Volos (Greece) in 2003. Responsible use of water constitutes in many ways a test for commitment to the cause of a sustainable future.
The following texts summarise the outcomes of the Assembly.The scope of the dossier, however, goes wider than this. It is a reminder of the irreplaceable role of water in our lives, of problems which we need to face in our dealing with water and also a recollection of the very specific functions which water has, from the practical to the symbolic and the liturgical.
Faith and Physics

Under the title Faith adn Physics the ECEN Creation Time working group have prepared a dossier of information, theological reflections and recommendations for action. The United Nations have declared 2005 the International Year of Physics, as the centenary of Albert Einstein's 'Miracle Year' in 1905.

Seven Motivations for Environmental Action

1. We believe in and worship one God in three persons, God who created the world, Christ who came to save the whole world, and God’s Holy Spirit who renews and gives us hope. Our responsibility for the environment is a logical consequence of this belief and this responsibility is binding for the entire Church.

Dossier on Church Environmental Management

1. Concillar process and Agenda 21
The Ecumenical Assembly in Graz recommended that the churches "encourage the development of a lifestyle which is directed toward sustainability and social justice". CEC and CCEE should also "participate in efforts aimed at sustainable economic life". And it is recommended that CEC and CCEE "support the Agenda 21 Process". Agenda 21 goes back to the conference on "Environment and Development" in Rio de Janeiro in 1992.
