The first WCC Eco-School was held in 2017 in Malawi for the African region with over 30 participants from over 20 countries. In 2018 the Latin America and Caribbean Eco-School was held in El Salvador and attracted about 40 participants. Subsequently the Eco-Schools were held in Asia and also in the Pacific region, attracting over 30 participants across each continent.
The Eco-Schools have produced so far over 150 WCC eco-ambassadors who have continued to work with their churches and universities on ecological issues.
The Eco-School is organised by the WCC Ecumenical Water Network in collaboration with various WCC programmes including the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance, Economic and Ecological Justice, Youth Engagement in the ecumenical movement, Health and Healing, and Ecumenical Indigenous Peoples Network (Mission from the Margins) and external partners including European Christian Environment Network (ECEN) and the Orthodox Academy of Crete.
The WCC Eco-School is an ongoing partnership between WCC, Thrivent Charitable Impact & Investing, and Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.
